Kakamega Rainforest Reserve is located 418 km from Nairobi city through, Nakuru, Kericho, Kisumu Kakamega town then Kakamega Isecheno forest station.
Being the only remnant in Kenya of the unique Guineo-Congolian forest ecosystem, the park offers unique wildlife and scenic beauty. For bird and butterfly watchers, this is the place to visit.
The forest is home to over 400 species of butterflies, about 300 bird species and 27 species of snakes (home to Africa’s largest and most aggressive Cobra.
The Kakamega forest Cobra – reputed by locals to spend a lot of time in the trees, stories abound of fearsome attacks on unsuspecting passers-by.
Other snakes in the area include the forest adder, black mamba, and the green mamba.)
The park also supports more than 350 species of trees and 7 primate species including the endangered DeBrazza monkey, black and white colobus monkey and vervet monkey.
The Potto (the world’s slowest mammal on earth), duikers and Dik diks are also found in Kakamega Forest National Reserve.
The forest has resident populations of primates, including the rare red tailed monkey, butterflies, chameleons and stunning birdlife, such as the giant Blue Turaco.

3 DAYS KAKAMEGA RAINFOREST RESERVE BIRDWATCHING TOUR ITINERARY
Day 1: Nairobi – Drive To Kakamega Forest National Reserve
0700 Hours: After breakfast you will drive to Kakamega Forest National Reserve which is situated in the Lake Victoria basin, about 50 kilometers north of Kisumu city and 418 kilometers from Nairobi.
1300 Hours: On arrival you will have lunch and then relax to the lodge.
1630 Hours: Best times to see birds. We take a sunset walk into the forest looking for the many species of birds found in the forest. We walk to Lirhanda Hill where you will see the sunset and generally the Forest canopy cover.
1845 Hours: Return back to our lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Full Day In Kakamega Forest National Reserve
0500 Hours: We depart for the early morning sunrise walking through the Forest to Lirhanda Hill the highest elevation (1700 above sea level) of Kakamega forest and see the sunrise.
Here we have great views of the entire Forest, see the Nandi escarpment, see the grasslands within the forest and then turn back and watch Birds, Butterflies and Monkeys.
Kakamega forest is one of the Important Bird Area (IBA) that has over 330 species of Birds including; Ansorge’s Greenbul, Blue headed bee eater, Turner’s Eremomela and many others forest species.
0930 Hours: We return back to the camp/ lodge for breakfast.
1030 Hours: We visit the Luyhia community and the Market around the forest and see the local thatched community bandas, community home stays, indigenous vegetables and community land cultivation.
1300 Hours: Mid day finds us at the lodge/ camp in time for lunch and rest time follows.
1530 Hours: We depart for a walk through the forest watching various species of monkeys, massive native trees marked as the “Big five” and their medicinal values, butterflies, birds, climb on the canopy watch tower and tour the natural grassland.
We continue watching primates, birds, some animals e.g. bush back, blue duiker, red duiker then we proceed to Isiukhu river where we see the water falls.
Later we proceed to Buyangu hill lookout where we view the Kakamega forest from the top and we turn back to the camp.
1845 Hours: Return back to the camp/ lodge.
