Kit-Mikayi (also spelled Kit Mikayi, Kitmikayi, and Kitmikaye) is a rock formation, a tor, around 40 meters high situated about 29 km west of the town of Kisumu in western Kenya. Kisumu formerly Port Florence, is the Kenyan inland port city on Lake Victoria.

The rock formation is located about a km from the Kisumu-Bondo road. KIT- MIKAYE: According to the Luo legend, these famous rocks form the place where Mikaye (the mother of Luo tribe) sheltered herself after a long journey down the Nile.

The Island is a 45 minutes ride on a speed boat direct from Kisumu city or a 40 km drive and a 20 minutes boat ride to the island.

Ndere Island National Park is a haven for birds. Covered mostly in grassland, Ndere Island provides beautiful scenic views of the Homa hills to the south, Mageta Island to the east and the glimpses of Kampala in Uganda beyond the south west horizon.

The lake shore supports a wide variety of animals including hippos, monitor lizards, Nile crocodiles, several fish species, snakes, baboons, impalas, the rare sitatunga antelopes, water bucks, zebras and warthogs.

Over 100 different species of birds can be seen here including African fish eagles, black headed gonoleks and grey headed kingfishers.

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive To Kisumu

After an early breakfast depart Nairobi for Kisumu City via Nakuru – Kericho arrive late in the evening with lunch en route.

Day 2: Kisumu – Ndere Island National Park

After breakfast proceed to Ndere Island National park via a boat. It is a haven for birds.
After a kilometre of hiking, Ndere Island provides beautiful scenic views of the Homa hills to the south, Mageta Island to the east and the glimpses of Kampala in Uganda beyond the south west horizon.

Day 3: Kisumu – Kit Mikaye – Drive To Nairobi

After breakfast, explore the legendary stone of Kit Mikayi (The weeping rock). Kit Mikayi is a large rock with three rocks on top, standing tall above many surrounding rocks in Kangeso village.
It is rested up near Ndere Island. The stone’s features and structure represents the Luo cultural polygamous. Kit Mikayi is part of Mt Elgon and Cherangani hills ecosystem.

It has also become a popular local pilgrimage site for adherents of the Legio Maria sect who come to the rock to pray and fast for several weeks at a time.

After lunch drive back to Nairobi arrive late in the evening.
